Theodore
Kate and Daniel were expecting their second child, a boy, and looking for a vintage-style name that wasn’t too popular. Kate wrote in to the blog to ask for opinions on their name list, and got a very positive response from readers.

Kate and Daniel welcomed their son at the end of last year, and after some discussion, they decided to name him

THEODORE ADAM,

brother to Matilda.

Matilda is adoring being a big sister, and Kate is very happy with their son’s name: they get compliments on it all the time. I think readers will be impressed too, as Theodore was one of the favourite options.

Congratulations to Kate, Daniel, and Matilda on the new addition to the family! I just love how Matilda and Theodore sound together. Thanks to everyone who helped out with opinions and advice.

Cassandra and Jason were expecting a sibling for their daughter, and quickly settled on a name for a baby girl. However, their 20 week scan showed that they were about to welcome a baby boy instead. With no boys names chosen, Cassandra wrote in to the blog for ideas.

Cassandra and Jason selected several different possible names, and didn’t choose one name until after the baby arrived. Their son was born a few weeks ago and his name is

LEWIS BANKS,

brother to Daisy.

Cassandra and Jason have a surname like Bloomer, and didn’t want a name with an OO sound in it. Several blog readers wrote in to say that they liked the name Lewis, and thought it sounded nice with their surname, so I’m happy to see that they decided it wasn’t a problem after all.

Congratulations to Cassandra and Jason on the birth of Lewis! Lewis Banks is not only very handsome, but makes a wonderful match with Daisy.

choosing baby names, honouring, middle names

Emma and Dane were expecting a baby boy, and were having their baby name discussions sidetracked by the middle name issue. Emma wanted the name Michael, to honour Dane’s beloved grandfather, while Dane thought it would be easier not to have any middle name at all.

Blog readers (and the blog author herself) were not on board with the no-middle-name plan, and gave it a decisive thumbs down. However, there were many suggestions as how grandfather could be honoured without using the name Michael.

When Emma and Dane’s son arrived, they gave him the name

SPENCER MOSES.

Spencer was Dane’s first choice for his son’s name, while Moses was grandpa Michael’s Hebrew name. They found a way to honour grandfather’s memory without using the name Michael, and Emma would like to thank us for our help and advice.

Congratulations to Emma and Dane on the birth of Spencer Moses, who has a handsome and meaningful middle name which connects him to his great-grandfather and his heritage! Remember that there are many ways to solve a middle name dilemma, but neglecting to choose a middle name altogether is not a desirable option.

Kylie and her partner were expecting a child, and she wrote in to the blog to ask what people thought of her favourite girl’s name. Kylie loved the name Azaria, but wondered if people would have a negative reaction to it, given the name’s history.

As it happened, Kylie had a boy instead and named him

KAELAN LOUIS CUNNINGHAM,

with both middle names honouring family members.

Kylie still adores the name Azaria, and it would be back on the table if they had another child. Maybe she will get to use her favourite name in the future.

choosing baby names

isabel sig

Sarah and Rupert always agreed that their first daughter would be named Isabella. However, when Isabella soared in popularity, they chose the name Isabel instead. Sarah wrote in to the blog just days before giving birth, having some serious name jitters and wondering if she’d picked the right name after all.

I suggested that Sarah and Rupert wait until the baby was born before making a final decision, and when their daughter arrived in February 2013 they decided to stick with their choice, and now have a little girl named

ISABEL GWENYTH.

Unfortunately, Sarah continued to have some anxieties over the name Isabel. But she kept re-reading the post about Isabel’s name, which reminded her of all the good reasons she had originally chosen it, and in time the doubts subsided.

Sarah now loves her daughter’s name just as much as she did at the beginning, and it suits Isabel perfectly. Even the spelling seems exactly right for her – she’s a strong and determined girl, and not at all a fragile “belle”! Sarah and Rupert rarely shorten her name, because Isabel is fine as it is.

Congratulations to Sarah and Rupert on their daughter, and for getting her name right even while worrying they had got it wrong. It’s a good reminder that sometimes it takes a while to settle into a name and get used to it, and just because you have a few initial misgivings, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have made a mistake.

And some exciting news: Sarah and Rupert are expecting a brother or sister for Isabel next year! Maybe we’ll hear from them again.

Sara and Jonathan were expecting a baby, and interested to know how they could choose a name which would work well in both Australia and the United States. Sara is an Australian living in the US, and she expects their children to grow up in both countries. Sara also felt under pressure to come up with a great baby name, because their got such a positive response to their eldest son’s name.

Sara and Jonathan worked together to come up with two baby name short lists before the birth, and then waited to see which name seemed best once their baby arrived.

A few hours after their second son was born, and after trying several different names on for size, they decided to name him

SAGE WILLIAM,

little brother to Felix.

Sage was a name that was on their list right from the beginning: they didn’t talk about it that much, but every time they eliminated names from their list, both of them liked it, and wanted it to stay on the list.

Just as with Felix, they have received lots of positive feedback for the name Sage, and have already been asked a few questions about it, as some family members hadn’t heard of Sage being used as a name before.

The name Sage now seems to fit their son perfectly, and just as the name Felix is connected with good fortune, the name Sage is connected with wisdom.

Congratulations to Sara and Jonathan on naming two handsome boys so well! They set about their name search so sensibly, and yet I think their eventual choice might have even surprised them a little. That name that neither of you can throw off the list just might the right choice.

Aimee wrote in to the blog because she and her husband were expecting a baby girl, and she wasn’t sure if the names she liked went with their son’s name, Oscar. Her husband having vetoed Eloise, Aimee’s favourite name, her next choice was Scarlett – but was Scarlett a clash with Oscar?

I thought Oscar and Scarlett sounded perfectly fine, and readers agreed, with almost half thinking they made a good match, and 91% in favour of choosing this combination.

After reading my response and looking at the poll results, Aimee soon made her decision, and when their daughter arrived early this month, there was no hesitation in naming her

SCARLETT LOUISE,

baby sister to Oscar.

Congratulations to Aimee’s family on the birth of their daughter, and how nice when we can solve someone’s dilemma that easily!

Chinese names, choosing baby names, middle names, nicknames

Natalie and James were expecting their first child, and wrote in to the blog because they weren’t sure what they were going to call their son.

By the time Nat and Jamie got to the hospital, the name Jasper was their front-runner, even though Jamie had originally vetoed it. However, once their little boy was born, Jasper didn’t seem to suit him after all, and so they named him

FREDERIC FONG SHUN “FREDDIE“.

Frederic was another name that Nat had really liked, but Jamie had initially not been so keen on – luckily he decided Frederic was great after all. This is the second set of parents who had seriously considered the name Jasper until their son was actually born, and it’s also the second dad who vetoed a name, but then changed his mind – encouraging news!

Congratulations to Natalie and James on choosing the handsome, manly name with a handy nickname they had always wanted, and thank you to Natalie’s parents for choosing lovely Chinese middle names.

Kristel and David were expecting a baby girl – to their great surprise and delight, as they had been told they would not be able to have children. There was just one name they both agreed on, but Kristel wrote in to the blog because she was worried they might have chosen the wrong name. Not only was it very popular, but it was just one syllable long, and people told them it was too short with their one-syllable surname.

Kristel and Dave’s daughter arrived on July 14 weighing 2.8 kg and with wisps of blonde hair. They didn’t rush in to choosing a name, but got to know her for a few days first. It soon became apparent there could be only one name for her, the name they had always loved and wanted from the beginning, so she is called

GRACE AUDREY,

with Audrey a middle name shared with three generations.

They couldn’t be happier with their precious girl, and with her name, which suits her so well. Kristel would like to thank everyone for helping them, and nearly all who responded to their story encouraged them to choose the name they loved best.

Congratulations to Kristel and David!

BM-Jodie-Foster

Mia and Lachlan were expecting a baby girl any day when Mia wrote in to the blog. It was her second time writing in, as she asked for help in 2013 with her second son. As Mia and Lachlan aren’t planning any more children, she really felt that this name had to be perfect.

Mia and Lachlan’s daughter was born on August 27, weighing 6lb 7oz (2.9 kg). As soon as they placed her on Mia’s chest, she knew what her name was – it was Lou. Lachlan agreed, but both of them felt that Lou was not quite enough for a full name, and they needed something more substantial and more feminine for their only girl.

Mia liked the name Louella, but it didn’t seem right for her Lou. Then Mia’s mum made a suggestion, and it fit perfectly. It wasn’t too frilly and fussy, it had an American vibe like their sons’ names, and it wasn’t a common way to get to Lou. And so they called her

TALLULAH DOROTHY “LOU“,

sister to Bugsy and Jem.

Lachlan pointed out that Tallulah is a character in the movie Bugsy Malone (played by Jodie Foster), which made Mia slightly worried. But when she asked for other people’s opinions, most said they wouldn’t even notice the connection. Dorothy was the middle name that meant the most to them, as it was an important name on both sides of the family.

Congratulations to Mia and Lachlan, and their happily-named complete little family – Bugsy, Jem, and Lou.
