Rachel and Nicholas were expecting twins, siblings for their first child. They wanted names that fitted in with contemporary trends without being too popular. They picked out names for two girls fairly easily, but later scans revealed that they were having a boy and a girl.

Rae and Nick’s twins arrived safely in July, and their names are

CHARLOTTE MAE and BENNETT GEORGE,

a sister and brother for Mason.

Rae and Nick had a long list of “name rules”, which was making it hard for them to decide on names they really loved. The names they ended up choosing break several of their rules, but sound so lovely together that you can see they did the right thing by picking them.

It’s good to have rules, but always remember – they are your rules, and it’s for you to decide whether you want to follow them.

Anne and Kenneth were expecting their second child, a baby girl. They had only agreed on two possible names, but they still had to agree on middle names, and possible nicknames.

Anne and Kenneth’s little girl recently celebrated her second birthday, and her name is

IVY ELIZABETH,

sister to Will.

They didn’t choose the name until after Ivy was born. Ivy was Anne’s favourite name for a girl, while Elizabeth honoured the baby’s aunt. Anne and Kenneth are really happy with the name they picked out, and feel that it’s a name which suits their cute and lively daughter very well.

Ivy Elizabeth was a real favourite with readers, so I’m expecting a lot of support for Anne and Kenneth’s choice.

Hand holding a heart

Jenny and Sam were expecting a brother or sister for their son and daughter, and not only considering different names, but also thinking of how to co-ordinate two middle names if it was a girl.

Jenny and Sam recently welcomed their second daughter and have named her

SAFFY ISABEL LYNDA,

baby sister to Tillie and Texas.

Saffy was their front-runner for a girl, while Lynda honours the memory of a beloved family member. In the end, Jenny and Sam chose Isabel as the first middle name because it is also one of Tillie’s middle names. Not only does Isabel sound good, but it provides a link with Saffy’s big sister.

Congratulations to Jenny and Sam on the birth of their third child! They have chosen a very sweet and pretty name with a meaningful name story.

Brooke and Ryan were expecting their third child in June. They had a few ideas in mind for a boy, and quite a few possibilities for girls – enough that it was hard to choose. Brooke wanted a traditional vintage-style that wasn’t too popular.

Brooke and Ryan welcomed their daughter late last month, and named her

PEARL FLORENCE,

a sister for big brothers Alexander and Charlie.

Pearl is the birth stone for June, while Florence is a family name. Brooke is very happy with the name they have chosen for their daughter, and absolutely loves it.

Congratulations to Brooke and Ryan on the birth of their daughter! What a beautiful meaningful name, and everything they hoped for.

Expat Aussies Maggie and Dan were expecting their third child, and weren’t quite sure what name to choose if they had a girl. They wanted a flexible professional yet cool name that would work in a non-English speaking environment, and also sound good with their daughters’ names.

As it happened, they welcomed a boy and his name is

FELIX JAMES,

brother to Zoe and Gemma.

Congratulations to Maggie and Dan on the birth of their son! Felix is an international choice which sounds perfect with Zoe and Gemma, and does seem as if it could happily suit either a rock star or a lawyer.

Bianca and Daniel were expecting their second child, and had their name list in place, but as time went on Bianca continued assessing the list, until she wondered if she was over-thinking things.

If the baby was a boy, Eli was top of their list, and it was Daniel’s favourite choice. Bianca worried that Eli didn’t sound quite right with their son’s name, but also wasn’t sure what people would think of their other choices.

Bianca and Daniel welcomed their second son a short while ago, and they have named him

EZRA JACK,

baby brother to Arlo.

In the end they decided that Ezra was a better match with Arlo, and more their naming style. The name Ezra grew on Daniel as the weeks went by, and it was his suggestion to choose it, so the decision-making was very harmonious.

Bianca wants to thanks everyone who voted in the polls, as they really did help Bianca and Daniel with their choice.

Congratulations to Bianca and Daniel on the birth of their youngest son! Arlo and Ezra sound brilliant together, and there was overwhelming support from the public for the name, so I think this will be a very popular choice.

Eloise and George were expecting their second child in a month, and still hadn’t picked a name for him. They wanted something strong and masculine, preferably something English or Scottish to complement their daughter’s name.

Eloise and George welcomed their son about a month ago, and decided to call him

ANGUS, nicknamed GUS,

baby brother to Arabella.

Angus wasn’t one of their front-runners, and Eloise describes it as a “dark horse” that they rarely talked about. However, it was a name that nobody else they knew had used, and they loved Gus as the nickname. I remember that Angus was a name that Eloise said she liked, but George wasn’t as keen at the time, so this is another example of a dad who had a change of heart on a name.

Congratulations to Eloise and George on the birth of Angus! They found that perfect Scottish name, and the nickname Gus is adorable.

Sammie wrote in to the blog when she and her husband James had trouble agreeing on a name for their second child. Originally from the UK, Sammie wanted an English-style name to match their son’s name, but Australian James had firm ideas of his own.

Sammie had always felt that they were going to have a boy, and even though her instincts had let her down in the past, this time they were right on target. They welcomed their second son last month, and for three days he went without a name.

Sammie and James had three names they were thinking of, and they tried each of them out in turn. They even took their newborn baby down to the shops, and when strangers asked for his name, they gave them a different one each time to see how they reacted.

However, one name in particular just stuck, and seemed to suit their son’s sweet nature perfectly, and so he is

TED GEORGE,

little brother to Alfie.

Sammie had always loved the name Ted, but they already had a grown-up Ted in the family, so had crossed the name off their list. However, they decided to just get over it, because Ted is so obviously their son’s name, and Alfie loves having a real life “teddy bear”.

Sammie suggests that parents who aren’t sure what to name their new baby should wait for them to arrive, then trial a few names until one fits. Little Ted had his name thoroughly road-tested, and it worked out fantastically!

Congratulations to Sammie and James on choosing the perfect name for their son, which is such a great match with Alfie. Apart from Sammie’s excellent advice, this is a reminder that when there is a Big Obvious Reason why you have to cross a favourite name off your list, it may not be the problem that you imagined.

Catherine wrote in to the blog twice while she and husband Daniel were expecting their first baby. A lifelong name nerd, Catherine found that choosing a name for a real baby was much harder than all the hypothetical name lists she had enjoyed writing (surely many of us can relate?).

Catherine and Daniel welcomed their daughter last week, and took three days to choose her name. But there was one name which had always been a very strong contender, and in the end they decided her name was

MARGARET ALICE, “MATTIE“.

Catherine became very attracted to the idea of a girl named Mattie after reading Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford, which has a character named Miss Matty (played by Dame Judi Dench in the TV series). Catherine says Margaret is very definitely a Mattie.

Catherine wondered if her family might think Margaret was too old-fashioned, but her concerns were quite unfounded. Both families love the name they have chosen, and after announcing it, she discovered that the name combination Margaret Alice was a traditional one in her grandfather’s family. Needless to say, grand-dad is pleased as punch to welcome a new Margaret Alice into the family.

Congratulations to Catherine and Daniel on their daughter! Margaret Alice is a beautiful classic name, and how intriguing it ended up being traditional in the family – there’s a real sense of “meant to be”. The majority of readers championed the name Margaret, so I think there will be wide approval for it.

Jane and Dylan were less than two weeks away from welcoming their second child when Jane wrote into the blog having last-minute name nerves. They had more or less decided on Finn for a boy and Eve for a girl, but Jane didn’t feel 100% sure they had chosen the right names.

Jane and Dylan’s second daughter was born a week ago, and they had no problem at all in naming her

EVE ERIN,

sister to Lila.

Jane feels very comfortable with the choice they made, and everyone has commented on what a lovely name it is and how great Lila and Eve sound together. A few people said they had seen a movie on Netflix called Lila and Eve (Jennifer Lopez plays Eve), so obviously the film-maker thinks the names sound good together as well!

Congratulations to Jane and Dylan on their baby girl, and thank you to everyone for voting on the polls and leaving comments. That validation really helped Jane feel better about her decision.
