Kate and Steve were expecting their third child, and since they received help at Waltzing More Than Matilda when naming #2, thought it was worthwhile to try us again.

If the baby was a boy, both Kate and Steve were keen on the name Ted for him. However, Kate’s mum didn’t think Ted was a “proper” name, and that a more formal option was necessary for the birth certificate.

Kate wondered whether her mum was right, but after writing into the blog she felt a lot more confident about their decision, and when their baby boy was born, he was named

TED WILLIAM,

baby brother to Madeline and Lewis.

Kate and Steve have had an overwhelmingly positive response to the name Ted; most people have been a little surprised by the name, but in a good way. The midwives at the hospital told Kate that they have seen a few Teds born lately, so Kate thinks it must be a name on the rise – I agree with the midwives, as I see it fairly regularly in birth notices now.

If Ted had been a girl, his name would have been Rose Eleanor, and Kate loves the name so much that she feels a tiny bit sad that they won’t be having any more children, because baby Ted has completed their family. There’s so often that name you never get to use!

Congratulations Kate and Steve! Ted is such a great name, and it sounds as if everyone else thinks so too.

A-Annunciation_Titian-1522

Courtney wanted an unusual name for her second baby, and her first choice for a son was Arrow. She wrote in the blog wondering if Arrow was really too strange to use, as her husband Joel worried it was too different.

Most people who answered the poll seemed to think Arrow was the right sort of different rather than too weird. Courtney remained strongly in favour of Arrow, but in the end Joel couldn’t be persuaded.

Courtney and Joel recently welcomed their second son, and together they have decided that his name is

GABRIEL,

little brother to Israel.

Both Courtney and Joel love the name Gabriel, and Courtney thinks that the name works well as a brother for Israel. She also sees the name as a little nod towards the Christmas season, and I couldn’t agree more, as the archangel Gabriel so often features in Christmas pageants and Nativity scenes.

Congratulations to Courtney and Joel on choosing a beautiful name for their son! Even though Courtney’s choice of Arrow was vetoed, they were able to work together to find a name that was perfect for both of them. Courtney says maybe someone else will choose Arrow – who knows, maybe it is the right name for you?

mabel--633378303743281250

Charlotte and Jake had a very difficult time choosing a baby name for their new daughter. Their first choice, Elsie, was derailed by a family disagreement, and they came home from hospital with a nameless baby.

They started calling their little girl Mabel, but received so many rude comments from other people that it made them second-guess themselves, and wonder if it was really the right choice. Their name list got longer and longer, as the sixty-day due date for registration loomed ever closer.

After writing in to the blog, Charlotte and Jake made some tough decisions, and cut their list down to just two names – Elsie Josephine and Mabel Birdie Rose. Their daughter’s name was registered on the 59th day and her name formally announced, but there was a bit of to-and-froing on the registry front, as the middle name remained under discussion. The registry was very supportive and understanding during this process.

Finally, they could tell the world that their baby girl, now four months and one day old, was definitely (absolutely for sure and no take backs) was

MABEL ROSE, nicknamed “BIRDIE“,

little sister to OLIVE.

Charlotte, Jake, and Olive adore Mabel’s name and are very happy with the choice they made. Mabel Rose suits her best because it’s sweet and fuss-free, but the nickname Birdie is one that everyone loves, and Olive also has a cute little pet name that isn’t connected to her name. When Mabel is older, if she wishes, Birdie will be officially added to her name, but even if it’s not on the birth certificate, Birdie will be a part of her name story forever.

I think Charlotte and Jake have done an outstanding job at choosing a name which was perfect for them and their family, and what a great way to incorporate Birdie into her name. The name Mabel was extremely popular with the public, so I think other people are going to be very enthusiastic too.

I’m sure Mabel is going to be very interested in her name story in the future, and will be amazed at how many people were discussing her name before it had even been registered! I hope you’ve all enjoyed being a part of Mabel’s name story, and Charlotte wishes to pass on her deep gratitude to everyone who offered guidance and gave them the confidence to choose the name they loved.

Ashleigh and Dylan were interested to know if it would be legal to name their baby Duke, and also had several other names on their baby name short list.

However, Ash writes that they spent so long looking over their name list that in the end, none of them seemed right at all. A week before their son was born, they scrapped the list entirely, and started from scratch.

There was a name that Ash had liked for a boy as soon as she found out she was pregnant, but Dylan wasn’t keen. However, when they started their search anew, it was the first name he suggested, as in the intervening time, Dylan started to like the sound of it.

So when their son arrived a couple of weeks ago, his name was

VINCENT COREY “VINNIE“,

little brother to IMOGEN.

I’m so glad Ash and Dylan had the courage to scrap their list and start again – there’s no point sticking with names you no longer like, and much better to change your mind before than have baby name regret after. And isn’t it great that Dylan had a change of heart? It shows that just because your partner says no to a name, it doesn’t always mean that’s their final answer.

Congratulations Ash and Dylan! I think Vincent is really handsome, and makes a great brother for Imogen.

Constance and Sean were expecting twin girls, and having problems co-ordinating their name styles. Connie had her heart set on the name Winter, which had a very special personal meaning for her, and Sean’s favourite name for a girl was Martha. However, Connie had received some negative feedback from others about the name Martha, and worried that Winter and Martha were not a good “match” as twin sisters.

After writing in to the blog and receiving lots of advice from readers, I’m happy to say that Connie and Sean made the most obvious choice, and have welcomed their little girls

MARTHA PRIMROSE “POSIE”

and

WINTER RAPHAELLE,

two baby sisters for big brother Christian.

Connie says that although their names may not be a perfect match, they were both named with love and a little bit of compromise, each one of them receiving the favourite name of either their mother or father.

I think they have made a very wise and lovely choice – I love the spring-like Posie with Winter, especially for twins born at this time of winter, when it is still very cold, yet the first buds are on the trees, and you can feel spring in the air.

Connie also wanted to pass on thanks for the many people who offered their advice and support; it was greatly appreciated and very helpful.

Melissa and Luke were considering the name Margot for their second child, if it was a girl. While Margot was Melissa’s first choice, Luke was worried that Margot could become a “trendy” name in the future, inspired by the popular Australian actress, Margot Robbie.

The couple wrote in to the blog to ask what people thought of the name Margot, and we must have been very persuasive, because Mel and Luke recently welcomed a baby girl and named her

MARGOT,

little sister to Audrey.

Margot was a great favourite with the public, and a majority of people believed that Margot probably wouldn’t become trendy in the future, or couldn’t be trendy as it is already an established name. Mel says that the public response was very helpful, so thank you to everyone who took part; Margot’s name suits her perfectly already.

Congratulations to Mel and Luke! Margot is an elegant, sophisticated name, and a beautiful match with Audrey.

Fiona and Brent had agreed on a list of boy’s names for their fourth child, but Fiona was still worried that Brent’s preference for names popular in his own era would mean their baby’s name would seem out of place next to his peers. After writing in to the blog, she felt reassured that the names they had chosen were still quite popular, and even rising in popularity. (It’s nice to know some parents are actually pleased to find out their favourite name is a popular one!).

Before their baby was born, Fiona and Brent chose the name John together, but decided to leave the middle name until they had met their son. After the baby was born, the nurse commented that her son was also named John – John Patrick. Later, a wardsmen told them that her father was named John, and his middle name was Patrick too. Patrick was also a name they had considered as either a first or a middle, and the encounters at the hospital confirmed that the right name was

JOHN PATRICK FRANCIS “JOHNNY“,

youngest of three boys and one girl.

John is Fiona’s father’s middle name, and Francis is her grandmother’s maiden name, so her family is very pleased, and her dad terribly excited to have a little namesake. Fiona says her dad’s excitement and happiness has convinced her that they made the right choice.

Congratulations to Fiona and Brent! What a handsome name combination, and lovely name story to pass on.

Kelly and Adam saw the name Xanthe on Waltzing More Than Matilda, and were immediately taken with it as a possible name for their second daughter. However, as time went on, they began to worry that Xanthe might be difficult for others to spell or pronounce, and wondered whether the name would be too much of a burden. So Kelly wrote in to the blog to ask what people thought.

I’m happy to report that Kelly felt reassured at the response she got from the public, and found our replies very helpful. As a result, when their baby girl arrived a few weeks ago, Kelly and Adam named her

XANTHE JULIA,

little sister to Olive.

As soon as Kelly and Adam met their little girl, they knew Xanthe was the right name and it fits her perfectly, just as as Olive’s name was perfect from the start.

Generally they’ve had positive reactions from others, and most of their family and friends already knew how to spell and pronounce Xanthe, so there haven’t been any huge issues as yet. One thing they weren’t prepared for is that sometimes older people mishear the name as “Nancy“, especially over the phone.

Both Alexia Mae and Alison commented how sweet it would be to have two daughters with names starting with O and X (hug and kiss), which I thought was very fetching.

Congratulations to Kelly and Adam, and welcome Xanthe!

34.-ELIJAH-SSNRebecca and Daniel were having trouble agreeing on a name for their second son. Rebecca’s choice was Arlo, while Daniel’s was Ari, and they hoped to find a name that could meet them halfway.

Their little boy was born recently, and once he arrived, they decided on a name together very easily, which they both love. Their youngest son is

ELIJAH nn “ELI”,

brother to Xavier.

Congratulations to Rebecca and Daniel for picking a handsome boy’s name that is a beautiful match with Xavier. I love that all their differences were resolved once they met their son, and it’s interesting that Elijah and Eli begin and end with vowels, just like Arlo and Ari.

Kim C suggested the name Elias, with the nickname Eli, which seems very close to the chosen name – thank you Kim!

Sophie and Michael wanted to use the name Olive for their baby if they had a girl, but Sophie worried that Olive might become too popular in the future, and wrote in to the blog to ask what people thought.

In the end, they did have a girl, and decided to go with their first choice anyway, so they now have a little

OLIVE,

younger sister to Mary.

Sophie was prompted to send an update when she saw Kelly’s story about finding a name for the sister of their daughter Olive, and thanked us for our advice.

Congratulations Sophie and Michael, and I’m so glad you followed your heart rather than worrying about what might happen in the future.
