Samantha and Conall were expecting their first baby a couple of years ago. Samantha wrote in to the blog because her favourite name for a girl was Sadie, but every time she mentioned the name to someone, they brought up the old song Sadie the Cleaning Lady. It seriously made her question whether she should choose a different name.

In the end, Samantha and Conall had a boy instead, and he was named

LIAM CHRISTOPHER,

which was a family name they had selected right from the start.

A little while ago, Samantha and Conall welcomed their second child. This time Samantha wondered if Sadie was now too popular, since it just joined the Top 100 last year. However, she still adored the name Sadie, and felt that she should go with her heart. So once their daughter arrived, there was no hesitation in naming her

SADIE PATRICIA,

with Patricia a family name they had always planned to use.

Samantha and Conall have only ever had positive comments about Sadie’s name, and not one person has mentioned the song to them. They are very happy with the choice they made.

Congratulations to Samantha and Conall on not one, but two beautiful children given the names they had always longed to use! Blog readers were keen for Samantha to stick with her favourite name, with almost 30% of them urging her to use Sadie.

If there’s any lesson to take away from Samantha’s story, please don’t listen to silly comments people might make about names while you are expecting. Not only were the remarks about the song obviously outdated, as the name Sadie was already zipping up the charts, but since Sadie was born they haven’t been heard again!

And isn’t it interesting (and a bit scary) what a small window you sometimes have between choosing a name that’s “too controversial” and a name that’s “too popular”?

Carissa and Nick were expecting their second child, and were trying to choose between Avery and Quinn for a girl, and Jensen and Carson for a boy.

They had a boy, and named him

JENSEN FERO,

brother to Harper.

Jensen is the name Harper would have had if she’d been a boy, and although they considered other names, it’s proven to be the perfect choice. The name really suits Jensen, and Carissa receives many compliments on her son’s name, and how well it goes with Harper. If Jensen had been a girl, his name would have been Quinn.

Congratulations to Carissa and Nick! And a reminder not to throw away all your name lists, because they’re a go-to resource for your baby’s younger brothers and sisters.

Jodie and Drew were expecting their second child, and Jodie wrote in the blog looking for a vintage style name that didn’t have an obvious nickname. They had a good name list, but Jodie could see potential problems with almost all their favourite names.

In the end, Jodie and Drew had a son, and named him

ARCHER ALISTAIR,

a brother for their daughter Audrey.

Although Jodie wasn’t sure about the nickname Archie, it’s been more than a year now and so far nobody has called their son Archie. Jodie knows that might change when Archer starts school though.

Congratulations to Jodie and Drew! Usually it makes sense to go with your favourite name, even if it has a few potential issues. Most of the time the problem never comes up, or isn’t such a big deal after all.

Tessa and Patrick were expecting a second child, and Tessa wrote in to the blog asking for feedback on their name lists.

Not long ago, they welcomed a daughter, a little girl they have named

GEMMA MARGUERITE,

a sister for Lucas.

Gemma was always their front-runner, and doesn’t it sound pretty and elegant matched with Marguerite? Gemma was also the public’s favourite name from their list, and Tessa enjoyed watching the polls, so thank you to everyone who voted.

Congratulations to Tessa and Patrick – and to Lucas, who is loving being a big brother.

Elizabeth and Thomas were expecting a second child, a sibling for their son. Elizabeth felt that she was sorely lacking baby name inspiration, and wrote in to the blog for help.

While I was able to offer some help on girls’ names, unfortunately I wasn’t much use with boys’ names. Nothing daunted, Elizabeth went right through the entire blog to find a name that she loved, and eventually she hit on it – Bede! However, Thomas didn’t like Bede at all, so it was back to the drawing board.

Elizabeth and Thomas welcomed their second son last June, without having a name picked out for him. There’s nothing like having an actual baby to focus you though, and eventually they put their heads together and called him

PATRICK GEOFFREY “PADDY”,

brother to Xavier.

Congratulations to Elizabeth and Thomas! And this is a nice reminder that even if I fail you, and the blog fails you, and no inspiration strikes, and you can’t agree on any names with your partner, and you don’t get a name list done before the baby is born – you will work it out and find the right name. We all have perfect faith in you.

Kathleen and Michael wrote in to the blog when they were expecting their third child: with two sons already, they were stuck for boys’ names.

As is becoming quite a pattern lately, they had a girl instead, and her name is

PEARL JUNE,

little sister to Alfie and Ned.

Congratulations to Kathleen and Michael on the birth of their daughter – Pearl June is one of the sweetest names I have heard, and makes a delightful addition to Alfie and Ned. If Pearl had been a boy, her name would have been Otis Arthur.

Imogen and Charles were expecting their second child, and although they had already picked a boy’s name, were having trouble deciding on a girl’s name. As it happened, they had a boy on August 30 last year, and were able to use the name they had chosen. Imogen wanted to share it, because it’s a name they were very excited about, and his name is

FITZPATRICK SCOTT “PADDY”,

little brother to Allegra.

The couple wanted an Irish name to honour Charles’ ancestry, and it had to be a strong name that wasn’t too common. Imogen came across the name Fitzpatrick on Nameberry a few years ago, and it fit the bill perfectly, while the middle name honours a family connection. Fitzpatrick’s nickname is very Irish, and Imogen can even imagine him being called Fitzy when he gets older. If Fitzpatrick had been a girl, his name would have been either Margot or Greta.

Congratulations on the birth of your son Imogen and Charles – what a handsome and even noble name, perfectly chosen to honour his Irish ancestry, and with a handy nickname for everyday use.

choosing baby names, honouring, Japanese names, name meaning

138-216-large

Emma wrote in the blog last year because she and her husband Matt were expecting a baby, and were considering the name Lillia if they had a girl.

They welcomed their baby last November, and he was a boy, so his name isn’t Lillia, but

ARTHUR GENKI.

Arthur is a name that Emma loves, and she is also fascinated by the meaning of “bear man”, as there were many bear references around at the time. The middle name (said with a hard G as in Gilbert, not like Jen) honours his father’s Japanese heritage, and baby Arthur helped to choose it himself before he was born – any time the word gen was mentioned, he would give a little kick! Matt chose the ki part.

In Japanese, you can choose the meaning of a name yourself depending on which kanji (characters) you decide on. In this case, gen means “bowstring” (for archery), while ki means “season”. The reference to bows and arrows was chosen because Emma’s family heritage is Scottish, and her ancestors were famed as skilled archers. Maybe Arthur instinctively knew he was descended from a line of great bowmen!

Congratulations to Emma and Matt on the birth of their son, and what a wonderful name story that honours both parents’ heritage so beautifully.

Edie

Lydia and Oliver weren’t planning on more children after they had Archer and Cleo – but then they received a delightful surprise, with the news that they would be having another girl. Although lots of names were up for discussion, the two front runners were Edie and Quinn, and Lydia wrote in to the blog to ask what people thought of their choices.

The baby arrived early this year, and they chose the name fairly easily. The middle name was going to be Joy, but Oliver didn’t like that, and he made a suggestion that Lydia really liked, so her name is

EDIE FLORENCE,

little sister to Archer and Cleo.

The only issue has been is that Edie was born with health problems that required emergency medical intervention, and has needed a lot of care in hospital. With so many doctors and nurses reading her name, Lydia is frustrated that they often mis-read it, and call her little girl “Eddie”. She is thinking of changing the spelling to Eadie to make the pronunciation more obvious. Apart from that, she is absolutely thrilled with Edie’s name, and of course, absolutely thrilled with her daughter, who has proved such a tough little fighter.

Congratulations to Lydia and Oliver, and may their little Edie Florence continue to grow and flourish as much her name suggests. It’s a gorgeous name, and isn’t the sibset of Archer, Cleo and Edie adorable? Blog readers voted Edie as their favourite choice for the baby, so I’m sure this will receive wide approval.

baby name regret, changing a baby's name

dawn

Scarlett wrote in to the blog as she was suffering from a severe case of baby name regret. She and her partner Toby had been through a very stressful time when naming their daughter about a year ago, and selected the name Evelyn in a muddled and miserable state.

Ever since, Scarlett has felt that the name Evelyn was ruined for her by the very process of choosing the name, and it never felt right to her. She wanted to change her daughter’s name to Eve – a small change that would be easy for others to adjust to. However, while Toby wasn’t against the idea, he worried that making the name change official could be embarrassing for them.

Since writing in to the blog, Scarlett and Toby have started calling their daughter Eve, and have sent away their application for a legal change of name to the birth registry. It has been an easy and natural transition, and for the first time, Scarlett is proud to introduce her daughter, instead of feeling shy and diffident when saying her name.

Scarlett has written in to say thank you for the support she received, and how wonderful that the situation has been resolved so easily. Naming mistakes can often be fixed, so if your baby’s name is making you desperately unhappy, there is something you can do about it.
