Melbourne horse trainer Mick Sell, and his wife Mel, welcomed their third child in unusual circumstances. Their daughter Louise Maree was born around 5 pm on January 14, beside the Tullamarine Freeway, underneath the Melbourne Zoo exit sign. As with similar stories seen on the blog, Melissa was heading off to the Royal Women’s Hospital to give birth, when Louise insisted on being born there and then. She was delivered with the help of Melissa’s friend Julie, and the paramedics. Louise Sell joins siblings Sarah, 8, and Joe, 5.

Mick trains 20 horses not far from the Kyneton track. On Australia Day, he took five horses to a race meeting at Kyneton, which had been transferred from Hanging Rock. All five of his horses won their races that day, an unbelievable result which made Mick think that baby Louise was his lucky charm. Mel says a few people have offered to buy their daughter since then. The winning horses were Cashzoo, Vopop, Dance Crew, Whiskey Fur, and Enchanting Waters, which won the Hanging Rock Cup.

Just a few days earlier, Mick’s dad Ron, part-owner of Enchanting Waters, had been diagnosed with cancer, and Enchanting Waters’ breeder Maurie Bloom, died last Christmas Eve. Mick says that the day put a smile on people’s faces who needed cheering up. He was able to visit Ron in hospital and present him with two gifts: the Hanging Rock Cup, and his new grand-daughter.

AFL star Adam Cooney, and his wife Haylea, welcomed their daughter Evie Danielle on January 28. Evie joins siblings Ashlea and Jaxon.

Adam has played for the Western Bulldogs in Perth since 2004, and in 2008 won the Brownlow Medal. Adam and Haylea were married in 2009 – he famously proposed by putting a Burger Ring on her finger. At the wedding ceremony, he presented her with another Burger Ring, but this time he ate it.

Champion cyclist, Cadel Evans, and his wife, Chiara Passerini, welcomed their first child last month. After two years of trying to adopt, last month they were awarded custody of a fifteen month old baby boy named Robel. Robel had been abandoned in the streets of Shashamane in Ethiopia at the age of six months.

Cadel was the first Famous Name on the blog, after winning the 2011 Tour de France. Since then, he has become a sporting hero and a household name in Australia. Chiara is originally from Italy, and is a pianist, gospel choir singer and music teacher. Cadel and Chiara live in the Swiss village of Stabio, near the Italian border; they also have a home in Australia outside Melbourne. They were married in Italy in 2005.

Robel is a common Ethiopian name. I have seen it translated as meaning “my joy”, but also used as an Amharic form of the name Reuben.

NRL star Aaron Payne, and his wife Laura, welcomed their first child on January 25. Their daughter Naida was born at 2.20 pm weighing 2.5 kg (5 pounds 6 ounces).

Aaron is the hooker and vice-captain for the North Queensland Cowboys, and has played with them for the ten years of his career. He has been named their Player of the Year twice. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, he received the call-up to join the NRL All Stars, which plays the pre-season All Stars Match against the Indigenous All Stars. Players for both squads are chosen largely by votes from the public.

Aaron and Laura were married in December 2005, and shortly after her marriage, Laura apparently told an interviewer she was not planning on having children as she wanted the walls in her new house to stay white and clean! However, they did buy a house with four bedrooms ….

At the time of their marriage, Laura Payne (nee Richardson) was an occupational therapy student at James Cook University.

Naida is apparently related to the word naiad, meaning “water nymph”, from Greek mythology. It’s a popular name in Slavic countries, but seems to be fairly well used in Australia, especially Queensland (for example, the mother of Queenslander Governor-General Quentin Bryce has Naida as her middle name). It’s pronounced NY-dah.

In 2008 she became the presenter of late night current affairs show, Lateline, and last year was chosen as co-host of the ABC’s flagship news and current events programme, the 7.30 Report. She has a blog called Well Redhead, where she recommends interesting articles.

Phil was a software engineer for fourteen years before a career change in 2010 saw him become an animator. He worked on the film Happy Feet 2. Phil also has his own blog.

Soccer star Harry Kewell, and his wife, actress Sheree Murphy, welcomed their fourth child and third daughter on January 14, naming her Dolly. She was born just before 6 pm, weighing 3.59 kg (7 pounds 15 ounces). Dolly joins big brother Taylor, aged 11, and sisters Ruby, 9, and Matilda, 4, who are all very excited to have a new baby sister.

Harry has been a member of the men’s national team, the Socceroos, since 1995, in which he has scored 16 goals – most notably one against Croatia which took Australia through to the knockout stages of the 2006 World Cup. An exceptional player, he has been called Australia’s finest football export. He has played for Leeds United and Liverpool in the English football league, and also spent two years playing for Turkish club Galatasaray SK. Last year he relocated his family to Australia so that he could play for Melbourne Victory.

Sheree is an English actress who became famous on soap opera Emmerdale. She was runner up on the fifth series of I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here, where she won fans over with her sweet personality. She has also hosted several TV programmes, and been the face of Gala Bingo. Rumours abound that Sheree will be offered a role on Neighbours, which Sheree says is flattering if true, as she is a massive fan of Australian soaps Neighbours and Home and Away.

Harry and Sheree met at a Leeds nightclub in 2000, and married in Las Vegas in May 2002.

Former AFL player Graham Polak, and his wife Alyce, welcomed their first child in Perth on January 11. They have named their daughter London Joy.

Graham and Alyce chose her name in tribute to both their fathers, whom they have lost. Alyce’s dad grew up in London, and Graham’s dad is named Don. Joy is the middle name of Alyce’s mother.

Graham began his career playing for Fremantle Dockers, and was traded to Richmond Tigers in 2006. He suffered severe brain damage when he was hit by a tram on a Melbourne street in 2008. It took more than a month for Graham to recover his memory. He played football 14 months after his accident, but after getting concussion during a game, retired due to ongoing health concerns.

Alyce Polak, nee Oksuz, is a former model. She and Graham were married in October 2010.

London Polak is now the third celebrity baby announced as born on January 11, getting the year off to a flying start.

AFL player Jude Bolton, and his wife Lynette, welcomed their first child on January 11 as well. Their daughter Siarra Neve weighed 4.02 kg (9 pounds).

Jude plays with the Sydney Swans, and has been with them since 1999. Lynette is a wedding and event planner, and is part of the reality TV show WAG Nation, on Foxtel. The show looks at the private lives of the wives and girlfriends of Australian sports stars. She is a supporter of animal welfare charities. Jude and Lynette met in 2005 and were married in January 2010.

Although Siarra looks like a variant of Sierra, in this case it’s probably a variant of the Irish name Ciara.

Siarra Bolton is the first celebrity baby girl to be announced for 2012.
