Surfers Paradise property entrepreneur Billy James, and his wife Tracy, welcomed a son named William James Jnr on February 17. Billy and Tracy have a three-year-old daughter together called Seylah, and William is Billy’s fifith child.

Billy is the founder of iconic Gold Coast pub Billy’s Beach House, and recently let it be known that he will be running for councillor in the local elections.

We’ve had a number of stories on mature mothers on the blog, and here is one on a mature-age father – Billy is 64. He doesn’t mind the sleepless nights, and enjoys getting up for baby William; he says that as an older parent, you stop and appreciate it all the more.

This is another late news celebrity baby story:

Ballet dancer Lucinda Dunn, and her husband, Danilo Radojevic, welcomed their second daughter, Ava, at the end of last year. Ava joins big sister Claudia, aged 3.

Lucinda was classically trained in London and joined the The Australian Ballet at the age of 17. In 2002, she was promoted to Principal Artist, and now holds the record for the company’s longest-serving ballerina. She celebrated her twentieth anniversary with the ballet company in July 2011; as she was pregnant at the time, celebrations were low-key. Danilo is the Associate Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet.

Lucinda has just returned from maternity leave, and has no plans to retire from ballet. Incidentally, I wonder whether the elegant Ms Dunn is helping to boost the popularity of the name Lucinda?

NRL player John Sutton, the co-captain of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, and his partner Stacey Shumack, welcomed a daughter named Pippi Rae 10 months ago.

Comedienne Sarah Kendall, and her fiancé, comedian Henry Naylor, welcomed a daughter named Viv 20 months ago. Sarah has been living and working in London for twelve years now, which I assume is why we have not heard of Viv’s birth until now. Sarah is currently visiting Australia to perform her show, Persona.

Henry Naylor is a Cambridge Footlights alumnus and one of its former Presidents. He is best known in the UK for his comedy partnership with Andy Parsons and their BBC radio show Parson’s and Naylor’s Pull-Out Sections. He has also written for several TV shows, including Dead Ringers.

Viv Naylor is named after her mother’s favourite fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood, the punk pioneer who set up shop in once-fashionable Chelsea, and her father’s favourite cricketer, Viv Richards, the scintillating former batsman for the West Indies side.

Motorcycle racing star Casey Stoner, and his wife Adriana, welcomed their first child yesterday. Their daughter Alessandra Maria was born late in the evening on February 16, weighing 2.8 kg (a bit over 6 pounds). Alessandra Stoner was born on the birthday of Italian multiple MotoGP champion, Valentino Rossi.

Casey learned to ride a motorcycle as a toddler, and has been competing since he was four years old. At the age of 14 he moved to England, because they allow professional competing two years younger than in Australia. He has won the MotoGP twice, including last year, and in the past six seasons, is the only rider to win more MotoGP races than seven-time champion Valentino Rossi, out-gunning the Italian great 33 wins to 26.

Adriana (nee Tuchyna) is from Adelaide and is the daughter of a motorcycle racer. She first met Casey in 2003, when she asked him to sign her stomach. They began a relationship two years later, after she had turned 16. Casey and Adriana were married in January 2007, and Casey has said publicly that marriage has made him calmer and a better racer. The Stoners are currently based in Switzerland.

NRL player Matt Ballin, and his wife Shannan, welcomed their daughter Mackenzie Dawn on February 12. Mackenzie Ballin was born at 9.31 pm at private hospital, The Mater. Mackenzie joins big brothers Fletcher, aged 2, and Murphy, aged 16 months.

Matt Ballin is the hooker for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, and in 2010 was a member of the Queensland side for State of Origin. He also works as a personal trainer. Shannan is a member of the Eagle’s Angels, a high-profile female support group for the Manly Sea Eagles, and Mackenzie will become a member as well. Shannan thinks that Mackenzie will be a tomboy, and she will definitely go to the footy.

Matt and Shannan chose the name Mackenzie because they loved it, and Dawn is after Shannan’s grandmother – who is “stoked” to have a great-grand daughter named after her.

Two days after Mackenzie’s birth, Matt flew to England to take part in the World Cup Challanege, and will be back on February 21. Shannan’s parents are coming down from Queensland for a few weeks to help out.

Jesse is the daughter of beauty salon owner Charmyne Palavi, who became notorious as the “NRL Cougar” for dating a number of high-profile NRL players. Now 17, Jesse and her boyfriend, security guard Jeremy Vyner, have welcomed their first child, a son named Xavier.

Charmyne says she has not quite realised she is a grandmother yet, as people usually assume Xavier is her own baby, and she takes care of him a lot of the time. Last year, Charmyne lost a baby that an Indian surrogate mother was carrying for her and her young husband, which led to the breakdown of her brief marriage. Charmyne is now dating again.

AFL player Steve Johnson, and his partner Erin Biggs, welcomed their first child on January 20 – a son named Archie.

Steve plays for the Geelong Cats, and at the time his son was born, was named as part of the club’s leadership group.

Archie Johnson is the second celebrity baby named Archie just in the month of January; this must be a significant sign of the name’s growing popularity.

Rugby union star Matt Giteau, and his wife Bianca, welcomed their first child on January 1, making their son Levi the very first celebrity baby of 2012!

Matt played rugby union for the ACT Brumbies, and the national men’s team, the Wallabies. Last year he signed with French club Toulon, and moved to France. Bianca (nee Franklin) is a netball player from country Western Australia who plays for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. An Indigenous Australian, she received the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Award for West Australian Young Achiever of the Year in 2003.

Bianca and Matt met at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, where Matt was attracted by Bianca’s athleticism and height (she’s slightly taller than him). Matt and Bianca were married on the Gold Coast in December 2010.

Both Matt and Bianca come from sporting families. Matt’s dad Ron Giteau is a former rugby league player who was captain of the Canberra Raiders, and his older sister Kristy plays both rugby codes for Australia. Bianca’s brother is Australian rules star, Lance “Buddy” Franklin. Levi Giteau has some fantastic sporting genes there.

I do apologise for the lateness of this news, as Levi’s birth in France never seems to have filtered down to the mainstream press.

celebrity baby names, nicknames, Slavic names

Champion swimmer Geoff Huegill, and his wife Sara, welcomed their first child on January 20; a daughter named Mila.

Geoff Huegill established himself as one of the world’s great butterfly competitors, winning bronze and silver at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and winning seven gold medals at various Commonwealth Games. He has won 28 international medals, been world champion five times and set eight world records. In 2005, Geoff announced his retirement from swimming, after battling with his weight and failing to qualify for the Australian team. Retirement sent him into a deep depression, which he tried to deal with through drugs, alcohol and junk food. In 2008, he announced his comeback, having shed 40 kg (88 pounds) in readiness. By 2010, he had already won a national medal and won the Australian title. He went on to win an international medal, and then took two gold medals at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. He plans to compete at the London Olympics this year.

Sara Huegill, nee Hills, was in PR at a major fashion firm prior to her marriage, and has her own fashion blog. She and Geoff were married in Bali in April last year. Geoff credits his comeback to Sara’s support.

Mila is a pet form of Slavic names with mil in them, meaning “gracious, dear”. It’s fast becoming a fashionable favourite that sounds similar to popular Milla.
