Ben Hudson from the Brisbane Lions, and his wife Rita, welcomed their son Stirling Frankie on July 24. Stirling Hudson joins big brother Ignatius, aged 2.

David Johnson, a former player for the Geelong Cats, and his wife Stacey, welcomed their son Reggie last week.

The Johnsons have had a tough time lately, as Stacey was diagnosed with a Sarcoma cancer during her pregnancy, and baby Reggie was born prematurely, at 29 weeks. In order to help out the popular couple, the Geelong Football Club organised a “backyard blitz“, where club members volunteered their time to help give the Johnsons’ backyard a makeover. Local businesses donated materials, and the whole project was completed on one weekend with the help of 90 volunteers.

Federal MP Andrew Laming, and his wife Olesja, welcomed their daughter Isobel today, July 24. Isobel Laming was born at Mater Private Redlands at 8 am, and weighed 3.05 kg (just under 7 pounds). Isobel joins big sister Sophie-Claire, aged 3.

Andrew represents the seat of Bowman in Queensland for the Liberal National Party of Queensland, first winning the seat in 2004 for the Liberal Party of Australia. Before entering politics, he was a doctor specialising in ophthalmology, and also holds a diploma in gynaecology and obstetrics. He gained his Master in Public Administration from Harvard University, and holds post-graduate degrees in Public Policy and Public Health. He has cleared land mines in Afghanistan with Halo Trust while working as a war surgeon, done research in trachoma and other eye diseases, and established health databases and a volunteering service. He has been part of the World Bank Group’s Health, Nutrition and Population Section in Washington DC, and a Health Planning Specialist in East Timor. Andrew is the son of former Queensland state MP Bruce Laming.

Olesja (nee Baturevica) is from Latvia, and her background is in banking. Andrew met her in 2005, while on a study tour of Latvia. The couple has been married since 2007.

Comedian Mick Molloy, and his wife Angie, welcomed twin boys on July 10, and recently announced their sons’ names as Fred and Lenny. Fred and Lenny Molloy were born a month early at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, and arrived the day before their dad’s 46th birthday. They are the first celebrity twins for 2012.

Before the names of the twins were announced, it was possible to place a bet on it at Sportsbet, with “Richo and Jack” being the favourites. It seemed that people were backing the Molloys to choose nicknames for their sons. After the births, Mick joked that the twins would be named “Ron and Jeremy” – an allusion to a joke at Triple M that adult film star Ron Jeremy is one of Mick’s celebrity doppelgangers.

Mick has been working in comedy since his university days, and while still a student met the comedy troupe The D-Generation, who have been so influential on the Australian comedy scene. As well as writing comedy for television, he became a regular on The D-Generation TV show in 1988. He was an essential part of The Late Show in the early 1990s, and then he and fellow cast member Tony Martin formed a highly successful comedy team on Austereo, with their Martin/Molloy radio show. He got his own TV show in 1999, The Mick Molloy Show; it bombed, but Mick bounced back and gained several acting roles in comedy movies and TV series, as well as hosting his own radio show on Triple M, Tough Love. He has had starring roles in the movies Crackerjack, Bad Eggs, and BoyTown, and since 2008 has been a regular panellist on the AFL show, Before the Game. Last year he returned to radio as a member of The Hot Breakfast on Triple M, as well as appearing each day on Triple M’s The Grill Team.

Mick has kept the identity of his wife Angie private, as she is not in the entertainment business, and it was only recently that the media reported her name. Mick and Angie have been together for about five years.

There are many comedians with the names Fred and Lenny, so they do seem very suitable for the sons of a comedian. However, they are also names gaining popularity, and Lenny in particular is a name I am seeing more and more often in birth announcements.

Co-captain of the AFL Sydney Swans Jarrad McVeigh, and his wife, model Clementine, welcomed their daughter Lolita-Luella on July 8. Lolita-Luella McVeigh was born at Sydney’s Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick, arriving at 3.17pm and weighing 3.2 kg (7 pounds).

You may remember Jarrad and Clementine from the blog last year, when they lost their baby Luella at the age of four weeks, due to a congenital heart problem. After her death, the couple went on an overseas trip so they could get away from everything and work through their grief together. It was while they were in Italy that they conceived Lolita-Luella, and she was born 17 days before Luella’s birthday. The second part of her name is obviously in honour of her sister; I understand that she will be called Lolita in everyday life.

In an interview, Jarrad says that they are proud of Luella for the courage she demonstrated in her short life, that they think about her every day, and that she will always be part of their family.

Television presenter Shelley Craft, and her husband Christian Sergiacomi, welcomed their daughter Eadie Rose on June 12. Eadie Sergiacomi joins big sister Milla Grace, who is nearly two.

Shelley is a popular presenter who was on Channel 7 for many years, until she moved to Channel 9 in 2008. She currently hosts Australia’s Funniest Home Videos, and is a co-host on Domestic Blitz and The Block. This year’s season of The Block had its final episode last night, with each couple’s renovated house going successfully to auction.

Christian is a cameraman on The Block, and he and Shelley were married in 2009, at their beach house in Byron Bay. He and Shelley have recently started their own business venture together, The Builder App.

You may remember that 2011 celebrity baby Sailor Shelley Denyer gained her middle name in honour of Shelley Craft.

Shelley and Christian proved that they had an eye for baby names when they chose Milla, as it is now Top 100 and still climbing. As Eadie is also on trend, it will be interesting to see how the name fares in the next couple of years.

NRL star Cameron Smith, and his wife Barb, welcomed their daughter Matilda six weeks ago. Matilda Smith joins siblings Jada, aged 4, and Jasper, aged 2 and a half.

Cameron has played for the Melbourne Storm since 2002, and the following year was named the team’s Rookie of the Year, as well as making his debut for Queensland in the State of Origin Series. In 2005 he was named Melbourne’s Player of the Year; in 2006 he won the Dally M Medal, was once again named Player of the Year, and made his debut for Australia in international rugby league. In 2007 he was named Club Player of the Year again, and in State of Origin, won the Wally Lewis Medal for player of the series, and the Ron Mcauliffe Medal for Queensland player of the series. In 2008 he became captain of the Melbourne Storm, and also captained Queensland for the entire Origin series of that year. In 2009 he became the Melbourne Storm’s highest ever points-scorer, and in 2010 became the first player for the Melbourne Storm to reach 1000 points. Last year he won the Wally Lewis Medal again, and was also named the Dally M Captain of the Year, and Dally M Hooker of the Year. Cameron is currently preparing for the last match of the 2012 Origin series, which takes place on July 4.

Barbara (nee Johnson) and Cameron have been together since their high school days. They were married last year.

NRL player Jeremy Smith, and his wife Jody, welcomed their third child and first son on June 9; their son is named Jeremy after his dad. Jeremy Smith Junior joins big sisters Marly, aged 6, and Evie, aged 1.

Jeremy is originally from New Zealand, and is a cousin of Kalifa Faifai Loa, who plays rugby league for the North Queensland Cowboys. Jeremy has been playing professionally since 2004, and began his career with the Melbourne Storm. He has played for the Cronulla Sharks since last season, and also represented the New Zealand Kiwis in last year’s ANZAC Test.

Jody went into labour unexpectedly on the preceding Friday, giving birth to baby Jeremy in the early hours of Saturday morning. When he got home from hospital, he had two children to care for, including his baby daughter, so there was little rest for him. Despite 36 hours without sleep, Jeremy scored the first try of the game in the 17th minute, and Cronulla beat the Gold Coast Titans 22-10.
