These lists always split names by their ‘spelling’ rather than their sound. E.g. Lily and Lilly ranked separately. Since we don’t know the spelling of a child’s name when they are being called in the playground then people who are concerned with picking a name by ranking have to take this into account…
By my simple excel calculations from the top 100 National list (just listed on SMH), Sofia/Sophia is actually still in top 10, Isabelle/Isabel, Madeline/Madeleine ranked much higher. Even Emilia and Amelia are too similar to split despite the difference in A and E. This doesn’t even take into account spellings that might be outside of the top 100 that add to those numbers and might push others out/in.
If you could put together a top 100 based on the ‘sound’ of a name that would be great 🙂 I think you’ve done that before…
You’re quite right, and the national Top 100 does combine name spellings – it will be published on the blog tomorrow.
One of the problems with combining spellings is that people seem to disagree what is the “same name”: the national data combines Milla and Mila, which to me are pronounced differently, but Amelia and Emilia are two names, even though to me these are said almost identically.
