Former AFL footballer Kym Koster, and his wife Sarah, welcomed a new baby son a week ago, named Jed Hardy.
Kym explains that they were looking for a baby name that seemed boyish and strong, and wanted something “a little bit original”. “We don’t know of many Jeds out there,” said Kym. He has already bought Jed his own tiny football to play with.
Jed Hardy Koster joins big brothers Josh, 13, and William, 10, from Kym’s previous marriage.
Kym made his AFL debut for Footscray in 1994, and transferred to the Adelaide Crows in 1996. He retired in 2000 and now runs a successful cleaning business. Last year he won Man of the Year from Men’s Health magazine.

That is the first time I’ve seen Kym spelled that way and used on a guy. Is that his complete name or is it short for Kymbal?
As far as I know, that’s his full name. Kymbal would be very unusual in Australia.
I’ve seen other guys called Kym and Lyndsay and so on, and I think they’re all in that same age group. It might have been in vogue during the 1970s?
A friend of mine has a Jed; it’s a name I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for too. One of those names that only needs a nudge to start rocketing up the name charts, I think. Jedidiah reappear last year in the US top 1000, but my feeling is it’s the shorter, friendlier Jed that will take off here and in Australia.
Grrr, reappeared!
Without giving too much away, expect to see more of Jed in the next few days … 😉
