Comments: Fun royal baby name fact – George, Alexander and Louis all rose in popularity in 2013!
NOTE: Because of its small population size, Tasmania’s top names are its complete name data. For the same reason, its charts are highly volatile.
Very interested that the name ‘Leo’ fell so heavily in Tasmania in 2013, even with such a small sample size. My 3 1/2 yo son is named Leo and we live in Tasmania. Leo fought a rare and nasty form of cancer for 2 years, relapsing in Jan 2013. He has a considerable Facebook following, peaking this year at 45K views, features in the local northern newspapers regularly and many people in Tassie know of Leo. I wonder if the name has become synonymous with the word cancer here, putting parents off.
Do watch the name in Tassie over the next year or two. Leo became a terminal patient and was sent home to die in May 2014. However, instead of dying, he has miraculously recovered with absolutely no medical intervention. He has well outlived the ‘weeks’ he was given 10 months ago and he is a happy, healthy little boy who is fully immunised, growing like a weed and preparing for kindergarten next year. The doctors are absolutely baffled and people don’t recognise him in the street any more because he is so well. Give the name ‘Leo’ 5 years to also recover in Tassie and I believe it will be back. It really is a great name. 🙂
Rebecca, the name Leo has fallen in every state and territory whose data I have seen so far for 2013 (most of them). I’m sure it is a national trend, so please don’t think your little boy is to blame for it.
These things can go up and down, so the name Leo might very well go up again in popularity in time. And even if it doesn’t, it will still be a handsome, brave, lion-hearted name!
I’m so happy to hear that your son has made such a dramatic recovery, and I see from the FB page that you are expecting another baby, so congratulations! 🙂
*Blush* I hadn’t considered other states. Regardless of popularity, I am still very happy with our name choices so far. With a name like Rebecca, I really don’t want names that are too popular. On the other hand, my husband Kyron won’t consider names he thinks the child will need to repeat upon every new introduction as he does. Thank you for your congratulations. I’m a little name obsessed right now. I just wish there were more masculine animal names. Thankfully, we still have plenty of time.
Keep up the great blog. I really look forward to checking it out each week.
Ooh I love animal names, and they are very stylish right now. Griffin and Phoenix are two I like with Leo. A lion is such a royal beast, I would like something equally powerful to match it.
Great suggestions! (I can’t quite believe I have personal naming advice for you! Wow!) Sadly my sister put a hold on Griffin a long time ago. Perhaps I’ll see if she’ll give it up. 😉
If it was a long time ago, she might have changed her mind … I also like Orson (“bear cub”) and Ari (“eagle”). Ari has three letters like Leo, too.
